Cuban Jazz Project

THE CUBAN JAZZ PROJECT is an all-star ensemble of extremely high-end Cuban and American jazz players brought together by gregarious Cuban-American musician and entrepreneur Tony Betancourt. They take a jam-band approach and burn a giant hole through jazz standards, originals and traditional Cuban motifs.

GREGORIO VENTO (Cuban Conquero) congas & spiritual adviser Gregorio understands the tradition of Cuban conquero music of the 40s through 60s, and is deeply rooted in traditional Cuban spirituality. Gregorio Vento lives in the Boston area.

ARUAN ORTIZ keyboards. Half-Man, Half-Amazing, Aruan Ortiz is the latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States. Influenced by jazz greats such as Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Andrew Hill and Thelonius Monk, Aruan's jazz career took off as a sideman in Barcelona and Paris, playing with luminaries such as Stefon Harris, Wallace Roney, Sheila E., and Jane Bunnett, among many others.

BARON BROWNE - electric bass. Cobhams 3-disc bassist & musical director, and Jean-Luc Ponty veteran.

KARINA GONZALEZ: singularly brilliant exponent of Cuban Clave drumming.

TONY BETANCOURT guitarist. He is nexus, the magus, the universal joint of the operation who brought everyone together and catalyzed them as a band. Also from Cuba, Tony has been in the States since shortly after the Revolution in Jan 61. He played regularly with Rick Danko of the Band, Cuban piano giant Tony Perez and currently with long-time former Band guitarist Jim Weider.

Our musicians have gone through a plan to performance improvement plan and are now playing much better.
